ATVs are designed to handle tough terrain, but to keep their performance level high, they need to regularly undergo maintenance. Whether you use your ATV to trail ride, hunt or scout your property, regular maintenance will keep it running. There are several basic tasks you can complete at home.

Don’t Ignore the Owner’s Manual

Before you attempt any repairs or projects, take a look at your owner’s manual! You will find all the information you need in regard to the proper products and instructions you need. It’s important to use this information because it will be the most specific to your model.

Care For Your Battery

The battery might seem like a simple component, but it keeps your ATV running its best. Without a functioning battery, the engine can’t start, the lights won’t work, and you’ll be a sitting duck!

Every so often you should check the battery posts for signs of build up or corrosion. Cleaning the posts can extend the life of the battery, but if you notice a constant build up of material, it’s time for a new battery.

If you don’t use your ATV during the colder months, you should remove the battery and place it on a tender. This will prevent the battery from draining and being unable to hold a charge.

Maintain the Driveline

Your ATVs driveline distributes engine power and allows your wheels to turn. It is typically operated by a chain or belt, and the moving parts need to be well cared for. Applying a lubricant to the belt or chain can keep it moving smoothly and prevent frustrating problems. You should also check the tension; if it’s too tight or too loose, it will need to be adjusted by a mechanic.

Monitor Tire Pressure and Tread

Good tires improve safety and keep your ATV ready to ride, so you should regularly check the air pressure. Use a tire pressure gauge and the suggested psi to keep your tires in good shape. Too much or too little pressure can result in dangerous situations by causing a blowout or flat tire.

You should also monitor the tread of each tire and replace them when necessary.

Oil and Filter Changes

Combustible engines need oil changes to operate properly. The oil prevents the internal components from damage! Routinely check your oil and perform changes when needed. If you see signs of metal shavings, this means there are parts grinding down, so you may need to have your ATV professionally serviced.

Your oil should not appear dark or sludgy! If it is, you’re overdue for an oil change.

When you change the oil, you should also check the filters. This includes the oil filter, fuel filter, and air filter.
